Quesnel, Pasquier

Quesnel, Pasquier
(1634–1719)
   Theologian.
Quesnel was a member of the Congregation of the Oratory in Paris, France. He is remembered for his Réflexions Morales, a verse-by-verse commentary on the New Testament. Then, in 1675, his edition of the works of St Leo was placed on the Index because of its supposed Gallican tone. He was accused of holding Jansenist opinions and in 1684 he moved to Brussels where he stayed with Antoine arnauld. Arrested at the instigation of Louis XIV, he escaped to Holland. In 1708 the Réflexions was formally condemned by Pope Clement XI. Although Quesnel continued to defend himself, his theology was rejected in the papal bull ‘Unigenitus’ of 1713.
